tripping.
i get it. time changes are trippy things. it's one of those rare moments when as an adult you revert back to that 5 year old saying of "but why??" i'm sure you could figure out all the historical implications with a simple click through wikipedia but for the sake of my rant, and the entertainment of my readers - let's ignore that.
working at a retirement home, one has the advantage of being able to predict the general energy of the aging crowd before the breakfast shift starts. if it's raining, every single table you serve coffee to throughout the two hour shift will make a comment on the weather. same goes for extremely hot or cold weather. (keep in mind this is slo) also it would seem that in this crowd, if you are over 5'5" you MUST have played basketball. so when i got to work at 6am (which thankfully felt like 7am) i was expecting that i would get some sleepy eyed residents coming in for breakfast in half an hour (breakfast starts at 7:30am) sure enough, on the dot, a woman strode into the room - ignoring the fact that the entire dining room was empty - and demanded to be served right away because SHE had to go set up for church in 15 minutes. i politely asked her if she had remembered about the time change to which she insisted she had and pointing at the clock above me (which maintenance had not yet changed) told me that it was 7:30am. i made a feeble attempt of trying to explain the concept with my cell phone ("it just automatically updates") on deaf ears (pun intended) and realized i still really have no idea who, why or how an extra hour of time just gets added to our day.
other highlights of work, the time change, and the elderly was a woman who threw everything into question because of the time change. her clock wasn't right so how could she be sure what day it was, what the days of the week were and if she had the right dinner menu. after saying the days of the week with her, unfortunately finding out she did not have the current week's meal menu, and dropping off cheese danishes and scrambled eggs i would like to think she was in better spirits.
now that i'm off work and presented with an afternoon (+1 extra hour) with nothing scheduled. i'm inclined to curl up in bed, with all my blankets and a batman movie marathon. but the idea of a sunny walk through downtown is also intriguing.
*the picture is from the dear peppered palm.
**i really do love the energy the residents bring to my breakfast shift mornings. for every grumpy, ornery one there is another that tells you how wonderful you. and then there's the one that asks you what your last name is and how tall you are. every. single. time. they make me laugh.
